Fran's View

What is global warming? The textbook definition describes it as a "gradual increase in the overall temperature of the Earth's atmosphere, generally attributed to the greenhouse affect, caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants." The definition is clear; but what is causing global warming?

Scientists have been looking for causes of global warming and so far the best explanation of it is the all too well known greenhouse effect. Greenhouse gases, which are emitted from humans, come from various things that we use; some of the most responsible perpetrators are fossil fuels in cars, factories, and electricity production. Although fossil fuels contribute greatly to greenhouse emissions, it is known that carbon dioxide is the worst culprit.

How does global warming affect us? Mega storms such as hurricanes are becoming stronger due to the effects of global warming. Temperatures are rising everywhere, even at the Earth's poles, causing icebergs and glaciers to begin to melt. Because of the effects of global warming, precipitation has increased. Sea levels are expected to rise on average of 7-23 centimeters by the end of this century.
